Compostable and biodegradable drinking straws are not the same. Biodegradability and compostability are terms, which are often used in our language. Their usage shows on one hand, the growing interest against environment, and on the other hand, how easy it is, to create confusion on delicate topics.
Once the meaning of both words is clear, environmental awareness can be shown doing the right choices during daily shopping tours, also if we are talking from drinking straws.
Compostable and biodegradable drinking straws
The biggest difference between compostable and biodegradable drinking straws is the type of decomposition.
A material is known as biodegradable, when it decomposes during biological activity – e.g. with help of microorganisms or enzymes – it dissolves into chemical elements, and it is converted into nutrients. It is named compostable, when the material decomposes with help of organisms and controlled conditions, and becomes compost, which can be used as fertilizer.
Another big difference is found in the time frames, in which the materials are decomposed: compostable material decomposes in less than 3 months, biodegradable material in about 6 months.
